Metamorphosis of many conventional careers is on the rise. Traditional materials or industrial engineers will be required to save the environment - designing solutions for waste management problems. Recruiters would look out for Drone photographers or drone traffic optimisers. Traditional fields of Architects or Civil engineers will require metamorphoses into structural engineers who will make makeshift homes using 3-D printing to provide temporary buildings for people in crisis situations of natural disaster, war or medical outbreak. Once the crisis is over the structures could be recycled and reused multiple times.Â
Marketing, Ad and PR is transforming and will continue to do so. Digital Marketing, Content Writing are emerging career choices. The new trends are use of AI like ‘chat-bots’, ‘Programmatic Advertising’ where customers click on the ad which converts it into sale by the advertiser, ‘Conversational Marketing’ or exchanging messages on the website. ‘Social influencers’ are considered more credible than corporate advertising. According to Statista 67% of internet users in India are under 35 yrs and with around 65% of the population under 35 is the biggest audience. So Digital Marketers/Social Media Marketers would try to reach ‘Social Media Influencers’, an user on social media who has established credibility in a specific industry. Their posts, videos and messages through Instagram, facebook, TikTok etc. would increase the visibility of the brand. In other words brands will market with the voice of their own customers. Social Influencers can be well-known celebrities or personalities with a huge niche following who can ‘spread the word’.
The IT revolution in the late 20th C has given us plenty of information and data. The interpretation of this data is the most important task at hand as it predicts the market, indicates trends, shows patterns and behaviours of customers and so on. The analyses are used by organisations for formulating marketing and advertising strategies, making tactical decisions when to stop oil rigging, how the next game of cricket needs to be played, decide on the insurance premium of cars or seeing google mobility data to predict spread of covid 19. In fact all organisations are maintaining themselves through data-driven insights to remain successful. This has given rise to huge demand for Data Analysts in almost every sector - insurance, sports, oil, marketing and so on. As there are no formal degrees in Data Sciences yet, people with Computers, Statistics, Maths, Engineering or Economics background are hired instead.
The finance sector is in for a huge change since the advent of ‘bitcoin’. Finance or economic graduates were hired to study the money market or fiscal policies. With more digitised currency in use, now they will predict or analyse the volatility of the cryptocurrency market with over 200 cryptocurrencies already in existence (over 6000 altcoins were created). Cryptocurrencies according to investopedia.com is “digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security” making it difficult to counterfeit. This in tandem with ‘Blockchain’ technology brings the buyer and seller in direct contact without intermediaries, making the transaction decentralised thereby increasing safety and transparency.
In a scenario where jobs are evolving and the fear of becoming obsolete looming large, it is crucial to observe the changes closely, re-equip with the new trending degrees or tailor-made courses but above all metamorphose the mind-set to remain a learner forever.
